With DVDs having become the method of choice for home video, the process of transferring classic movies to this format has begun. Just as it was done with the advent of VHS tape a generation ago, the studio vaults are being opened to bring timeless films to life again using the latest in digital technology. Oftentimes this means a restored or otherwise enhanced version that might be even better than the one you have on VHS. Most DVDs also include extras like bonus footage, deleted scenes, outtakes, and audio commentary from the director or others involved with the film.
You can now view on DVD old time actors such as Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple, W.C. Fields, Boris Karloff, The Three Stooges, Gene Autry, and many more. Old movie classics now available on DVD include Gone With The Wind, It's A Wonderful Life, and Casablanca, to name just a few. There are also whole collections of movies for specific series or actors, such as the John Wayne Collection, Star Wars series, the Adventures of Captain Marvel, and Robin Hood.
DVDs have a number of advantages over VHS. Besides the improved picture and sound quality, they are easier to store last longer. Having to rewind when you're done watching is a thing of the past; DVDs also organize content by "chapters," allowing you to jump directly to a certain part of a movie, or watch it over if you missed something. Thanks to DVDs, now we can never say we are bored on a cold, snowy Sunday afternoon.
