Blu Ray Discs are the newest and latest movie technology available today. Traditional DVD’s can hold approximately 25GB of data on a single layer disc and up to 50GB on its dual layer. Before, a red laser is used to read and write the data onto the discs. With the new discs a blue-violet laser is used. The Blu-ray discs can hold up to 25GB/50GB and packs the data more tightly, storing it in less space. It can actually store up to 500GB on a single disc by using up to 20 layers.
The Blu-Ray discs were originally introduced in 2000. There were nine initial people involved with working on the Blu-ray technology. They were known as the Blu-ray Disc Association. The original Discs were sold by the Sony Corporation in 2003 but were extremely expensive. They were not selling on the market due to price and the inability to get more. By this time there were several companies working on the technique to make the discs and get them into the market.
The fist rewritable disc was released by Sony in mid 2006. It was able to record in single or dual layers. The quality of the blu-ray discs are many times better than the “old” standard DVD or CD. These discs can hold approximately ten times the data of a traditional disc. They also are coated many times over to prevent the disc from getting scratched without taking away from audio or visual quality.
