“Old movies” can be a relative term depending on the age of the person making the statement. But no one could argue that the 1961 Breakfast at Tiffany’s should included in the all time classics. Living a frivolous life with no commitment, Audrey Hepburn is stopped in her tracks when the secrets of her past are revealed. And Funny Face in 1957 which also starred Audrey Hepburn was a huge hit. This was based on the 1927 Gershwin musical and uses its original star Fred Astaire in the film.
Everyone has unique tastes, but the 1960’s movie To Kill a Mockingbird starring Gregory Peck has a plot that is timeless. It stirred hearts then and will again stir the hearts of those who care about justice. And then there is Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 Roman epic extravaganza of Spartacus.
In 1954 the movie Magnificent Obsession was brought to the silver screen. The stars alone could have made the movie a blockbuster hit. But the audience was in for a drama that would enthrall them. It left a haunting question in the viewer’s mind at the end. Is the best good deed one for which you are not noticed or rewarded?
There is something for everyone in the recent DVD releases. If you are an opera fan there is the 1955 Italian opera Tosca to round out the offerings. With all the above movie choices new out on DVD, all you need is a soda and popcorn to make many evenings complete.
